Here is the story of how Oren Loni became a blogger. When my family moved to the United States from Lithuania, I was just 10 years old and found the entire experience unsettling. Detroit, Michigan is quite a bit different from the home town I’d left. My parents didn’t have much time to help me adjust, they were both busy settling into both the community and their own new jobs, leaving me to my defenses.
While I spoke English reasonably well, communicating with the other kids my age wasn’t easy. They’re language was considerably more casual than mine, plus they spoke faster and used slang I wasn’t accustomed to. Needless to say, making friends wasn’t easy for Oren Loni.
Bored, lonely, and a bit afraid of my new life, I turned to two things for solace. The television and comic books. At the time, fictional worlds were more enjoyable than reality. Can you relate? Follow me on Twitter @oren_loni.
I know. There are lots of people out there that don’t think a regular diet of movies, television shows, and comic books are a good thing for young boys, particularly shy ones who are new to the country. They’ll preach getting out and socializing, saying that’s the only way thing will get better. I disagree.
Watching an endless stream of movies and T.V. shows did wonders to improve my language skills. My speech patterns gradually became less formal and I was finally able to start understanding local slang. The comic books did wonders for helping me to understand English a written language, something I’d been struggling with. And that was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
More Facts about Oren Loni
Probably the most important thing all that pop culture did was give me something in common with my new classmates. My newfound movie knowledge and the fact that my mom was diligent about making sure I had the latest version of the most recent comic books that I happily shared (I was right at that age where all boys love comic books, otherwise this might not have helped me out as much) meant I had the tools needed to start making friends and really settle into my new life.
I still live in Detroit, but my life looks very different from that 10-year-old boy who first moved here. I’m currently studying my other passion which is computer engineering which should master in the next year or so. The Oren Loni now is more secure and has a close circle of friends and a beautiful and understanding girlfriend.
What hasn’t changed is my love of movies, television, and comic books. I’m thrilled to currently live in a world where all three of those things happen to be colliding. I never would have imagined that a time would come when one of the highest grossing movies of the summer would feature Wonder Woman, when reading comic books is considered cool, or when some of the most popular shows on television feature comic characters. For me, it’s a great time to be alive.
As much as I love watching movies, this Oren Loni also loves talking about them, in fact I love talking about everything that goes into making movie magic happen, and that’s what this blog is for. It’s a platform that allows me to share everything I know about movies (don’t be surprised if some T.V. and comic book stuff also sneaks in.) Since this is all about sharing, please feel free to leave a comment, even when you don’t necessarily agree with what I say.
You want to know something funny, even though I love movies, I can’t think of a single one that I’d say is my favorite, I love them all. I’m the type of person who even kind of enjoys the bad ones. My favorite genres are sci-fi, Hitchcockian style films, cheesy low-budget horror, and action/thrillers.
My taste in television doesn’t differ all that much from my taste in movies. I’ll watch anything, but the shows I can’t get enough of are Gotham, Justified, Doctor Who, Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D, and the X-Files. I do geek out about anything Joss Whedon is involved with. As far as I’m concerned, his writing skills are unparalleled. My girlfriend is a huge fan of procedural shows so I’m becoming steadily more familiar with those.
Comic book-wise, you bet I have a favorite. I adore Watchman. It’s brilliant .
In addition to movies I enjoy taking long walks with my beagle, Riddler, eating candy and popcorn, and washing my car, and touring local Michigan brew pubs. If there’s a movie or a topic I should write about, simply contact me with your message, thoughts and ideas.
